Schubspannungen an festen und elastischen Oberflächen durch Ultraschallkavitation
Laufzeit: 01.12.2022 bis 30.11.2025

Interest in bubble-induced shear stress is motivated by a variety of technological, chemical and biomedical applications, where this effect is used. Ultrasonic cleaning, micromixing of liquids, intensification of chemical reactions and heat-exchange processes are examples of such applications in the engineering field. In the biomedical field, ultrasound-mediated drug delivery, ultrasound-induced blood-brain barrier opening, bacteria lysis or disinfection are examples of bubble-mediated bioeffects. During decades research works mainly focused on the violent mechanisms resulting from bubble collapses, including shockwave emissions and the generation of microjets. Recent sensitive applications have demonstrated that purely oscillating bubbles may also produce significant mechanical effects on rigid or elastic surfaces through the generation of shear stress. This shear stress results from the liquid flows created in vicinity of the oscillating bubbles. Up to now, the influence and modification of surfaces by bubble-induced shear stress has been mostly investigated qualitatively. The quantitative measurement of shear stress, as well as the potential control of the force exerted by an oscillating or a collapsing bubble near rigid and elastic surfaces, remain challenging.
The CaviStress project consequently focuses on the quantification of bubble-induced shear stress, through theoretical, numerical and experimental investigations of the interplay between a cavitation bubble and an in-vicinity interface. The main objective of the project is the control and optimization of wall shear stresses induced by cavitating bubbles, and its application in two different fields: (i) the particle removal on solid surfaces, and (ii) the molecular uptake into biological cells.
We investigate theoretically and numerically the shear stress induced by oscillating and collapsing bubbles both in bulk fluid and near rigid or elastic walls. The bubble-induced liquid flows are derived theoretically. The fundamental findings are compared to controlled experiments, from the single bubble case to a realistic multi-bubble streamer where turbulence and mixing occur. Once the liquid flows are characterized, the shear stress is theoretically and numerically quantified. Experimental investigation of the impact of shear stress on rigid walls focuses on its scaling dependence, thus allowing to identify parameter ranges where damage-free cleaning of sensible surfaces is feasible. In parallel, experimental studies of the shear stress on elastic walls focus on the internalization of molecules into biological cells by evaluating the cell poration efficiency from well controlled oscillating or collapsing bubbles. The expected quantification and differentiation of the bubble-induced mechanical effects paves the path to improved ultrasound-based procedures for cleaning and drug delivery through bubbles.

Aerosolenstehung in der Lunge und Einkapselung von Viren
Laufzeit: 01.09.2021 bis 31.08.2024

Mikroskopische Aerosole wurden als die Hauptinfektionswege fu¨r SARS-CoV-2 identifiziert. Diese Tro¨pfchen werden tief in der Lunge aus Auskleidungsflu¨ssigkeiten erzeugt. Wa¨hrend der Atmung bilden sich du¨nne Filme und reißen auf, wodurch feine Tro¨pfchen freigesetzt werden, die die Viruslast einkapseln. Im Gegensatz zu gro¨ßeren Tro¨pfchen, die sich in den oberen Atemwegen bilden, bleiben mikroskopisch kleine Tro¨pfchen, die hier untersucht wurden, viel la¨nger in der Luft schwebend und stellen somit ein ho¨heres Risiko fu¨r luftu¨bertragene Infektionen dar. Hier wird sich ein interdisziplina¨res Forschungsteam mit der Wissenschaft der Aerosolerzeugung und Viruseinkapselung befassen, das medizinisches, biologisches und stro¨mungsmechanisches Fachwissen verbindet. Wir werden den Schwerpunkt auf realistische Flu¨ssigkeiten zusammen mit Viruspartikeln legen und uns auf die schnellen und empfindlichen Stro¨mungen konzentrieren, die zu Filmbru¨chen, Tro¨pfchenbildung, Verkapselung und Stabilisierung fu¨hren. Der Schwerpunkt liegt auf Experimenten mit hoher ra¨umlich-zeitlicher Auflo¨sung, Simulationen des Zersta¨ubungs- und Tropfenbildungsprozesses von du¨nnen Filmen und der biologischen Virulenz der dabei erzeugten Aerosolpartikel. Wa¨hrend die Forschung durch die Virulenz von SARS-CoV-2 motiviert wurde, werden auch andere Virenarten getestet, um die grundlegende Mechanismen zu entschlu¨sseln, die zu einer U¨bertragung von Krankheitserregern aus der Lunge u¨ber die Luft erlauben.

Abgeschlossene Projekte

CHARAKTERISIERUNG DER WANDSCHUBSPANNUNG VON KAVITATIONSBLASEN
Laufzeit: 01.01.2020 bis 31.07.2023

Cavitation bubbles create enormous forces tangential to a surface, yet the small spatial and short timescales have so far hindered a detailed investigation. These forces have to be accounted for in an abundant number of chemical, biomedical, and materials processes. Examples range from eye-surgery to silicon wafer processing, from sterilization of surgical instruments to turbo-machinery. For all this processes it is important to gain a fundamental understanding of the forces caused by the violent bubble dynamics on a nearby boundary. While pressure forces acting normal to the boundary having received a lot of attention, the forces mediated through viscosity and acting tangentially to the surface are very little understood.
Here, we will combine numerical simulation and experiments to unravel the complex flow created by non-spherical oscillating bubbles and the thereby created forces on the boundary. In particular we will quantify the shear stress acting spatially and time-dependent on the substrate. To connect better to applications we will not only focus on a flat substrate but also extend our studies to decorated surfaces.
The PI’s group conducted the first experiments to measure the shear stress back in 2008 (Dijkink et al., Appl. Phys. Lett 2008). There, single laser induced bubbles revealed a lower bound of the wall shear stress (e.g. the tangential force) of several thousand kilopascals. Recent simulations from his group predict that the wall shear stress may be locally even an order of magnitude higher than measured.
The first goal of the present project is to provide conclusive answers for the time-dependent magnitude and distribution of the wall shear stress. A second goal is to model and measure the forces acting on surfaces with structures to provide insight to more application relevant situations. The third part is the extension of the studies acoustic driven cavitation, i.e. to many cycles of bubbles approaching a surface.
The deliverables of the project are: (1) to develop a novel technique to measure simultaneously temporally and spatially resolved the wall shear stress, (2) detailed understanding how bubbles create viscosity mediated forces on boundaries, and (3) experimentally validated simulations which will be made available to the public by using the OpenFOAM framework.

UCOM Ultrasound Cavitation in Soft Materials
Laufzeit: 01.10.2017 bis 01.05.2023

UCOM is a Marie Sklodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network; a joint research training and doctoral programme, funded by the EU and implemented by a partnership of high profile universities, research institutions, and non-academic organisations that are located in 8 different countries.
UCOM is the acronym of the project "Ultrasound Cavitation in sOft Materials”. It starts on 1st October 2018 and ends on 30th September 2022. The UCOM network is international (includes beneficiaries and partners from the EU, Switzerland, US, Japan and China), interdisciplinary (mechanical, physics, medical and biomedical technology fields), intersectoral (includes academic and non-academic institutions) and innovative (addresses topics not studied before).
15 doctoral candidates will be recruited by the research-focused organisations of the consortium to develop, improve and validate new state-of-the-art cavitation models and interaction with soft materials (e.g. tissues) against both existing and new experimental data. At the same time, the UCOM project will give the young researchers the opportunity to gain knowledge, skills and expertise but also to create strategic partnerships with leading institutions worldwide, preparing them this way for a successful career, either in the public or the private sector.

Präzisionsreinigung mit Mikrojets
Laufzeit: 01.01.2021 bis 01.06.2022

Das Entfernen von unpolaren tröpfchenartigen Anhaftungen mittels eines schnellen und transienten Wasserstrahls soll in diesem Forschungsprojekt untersucht werden. Hierzu werden Experimente und Strömungsimulationen von laserinduzierten Kavitationsblasen auf mikroskopischer räumlicher Skala und einer Submikrosekunden-Zeitskala zur quantitativen Analyse durchgeführt. Die durch den asymmetrischen Blasenkollaps gebildeten Mikrojets erreichen Geschwindigkeiten von bis zu 100 m/s und erzeugen Wandschubspannungen von über 105 N/m2 . Auf Basis dieser Mikrojets gehen wir die Frage an, welche Stärke und Einwirkzeit der vom Jet erzeugten Wandschubspannungen notwendig ist, um hochviskose unpolare Verschmutzungen abzulösen. Die angestrebten Experimente und Simulatio- nen erlauben es mit bisher nicht erreichter Auflösung die Mechanismen des mikroskopischen Kärcherns zu verstehen und den Weg für neue Techniken zur kavitationsgestützen Präzisionsreinigung zu bereiten. Wir erwarten als Ergebnis, dass nicht nur Vorschläge für die Optimierung von bisherigen Strahlreinigern gemacht werden können, sondern wir auch Vorschläge geben, wie optische und hydrodynamische Kavitation zur schonenden Entfernung von Oberflächenverschmutzungen genutzt werden können.

Evidence and Physics of Nanobubbles in Water
Laufzeit: 01.03.2019 bis 28.02.2022

Gases dissolved as molecules in water support life from bacteria to fish stocks. Recently claims emerged that water can be stably oversaturated by creating gaseous bodies, aka nanobubbles. These claims were supported with reports of their beneficial use. Yet as of now scientific proofs that nanobubbles exist are absent. Here, we will provide answers to the pertaining questions if these nanobubbles exists, what stabilizes them, and how they can be generated. Prof Ohl focuses on the formation of individual nanobubbles and their stabilization, while Prof Sun (China) evaluates large populations of nanobubbles through pressure sensitive dynamic light scattering.

Kavitation in weicher Materie
Laufzeit: 01.09.2017 bis 01.09.2020

Die Blasendynamik in Flüssigkeiten wie zum Beispiel in Wasser ist bereits sehr detailliert untersucht, jedoch wenn es um medizinische Anwendungen geht müssen wir auch die speziellen Eigenschaften vom Gewebe mit berücksichtigen. Insbesondere die rücktreibende Kraft des Gewebes beeinflusst die Dynamik der Blase aber erzeugt auch ganz neue Phänomene. In diesem Projekt untersuchen wie ein idealisiertes Gewebe Einfluss nimmt und wie Scherwellen im Gewebe erzeugt werden.

Viscous Dissipation and Heating from Cavitation Bubbles
Laufzeit: 01.08.2016 bis 31.07.2018

Kavitationsblasen können nicht nicht nur metallene Oberflächen erodieren sondern auch Oberflächen die mit einem Polymer geschützt sind abschmelzen. Wir untersuchen ob und wieweit viskose Dissipation in der Strömung die Temperatur von Polymeren über die Glastemperatur erhöhen kann. Dazu benutzen wir Fluoreszenztechniken und sehr schnelle Tempearturfühler die mit Hochgeschwindigkeitsaufnahmen kombiniert werden. Die Kavitationsblasen werden mit einem Laser erzeugt. Ferner modellieren wir die Strömung, die entstehenden Wanschubspannungen und auch die Wärmeerzeugung durch viskose Dissipation in der instationären Grenzschicht.

Oszillierendes Kochen
Laufzeit: 01.04.2016 bis 31.03.2018

Der Wärmetransport beim Kochen basiert auf dem Ablösen von Blasen von der heissen Oberfläche. Da die Blasen durch die Auftriebskraft abgelöst werden ist der Wärmetransport abhängig von der Orientierung des Heizelements. Wir haben einen neues Regime des Kochens gefunden, bei dem die Blasen an der Oberfläche oszillieren und sich nicht ablösen. Hier wird der Wärmetransport durch Marangonikräfte und die Oszillation bestimmt. Wir studieren dieses neue Regime des Kochens, modellieren, und versuchen es auf viele gleichzeitig oszillierende Blasen auszuweiten.
