Texte bilden Wirklichkeit nicht ab, sondern konstruieren sie. Aufder Basis dieser Einsicht werden literarische Darstellungen als spezifische Wirklichkeitskonstruktionen aufgefasst, die über eigene, imwissenschaftlichen Diskursuniversum vernachlässigte, ästhetischeErkenntnispotentiale verfügen. Diese Textformen können im Rahmenqualitativer Sozialforschung für das Verständnis der schweigsamenDimensionen des Sozialen produktiv gemacht werden. Der Beitrag nähertsich den Erkenntnispotentialen von Literatur sowohl über einehistorische Rekonstruktion des schwierigen Verhältnisses von Literaturund Sozialwissenschaften als auch über beispielhaft illustrierte,theoretische Überlegungen zur Wirkung literarischer Repräsentationen auf die Körperlichkeit und Sinnlichkeit der Leser.

Literature as ethnography. Representation and presence of the silent force of symbolic violence

Abstract

Texts do not represent reality, but construct it. Based on thisunderstanding, literary representations are seen as specific constructions of reality containing a characteristic potential ofaesthetic knowledge which the world of scientific discourse tends toneglect. Qualitative social research may make productive use of thiskind of text to enhance its understanding of the silent dimensions ofthe social sphere. The potential of knowledge inherent to literature isapproached by a historical reconstruction of the difficult relationsbetween literature and the social sciences as well as by a case-basedtheoretical discussion of the effects of literary representations onreaders’ corporeality and sensuality.
