A Rural-Urban Comparison in Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan
Short Description of the Project: Systemic change from a planned economy to market economy requires not only an implementation of market institutions but also a market -oriented action of citizens in everyday-life. The question that concerns us is how far actors have adapted to self-responsibility in facing such challenges as provision for the old age , unemployment, crises, etc. form themselves and their family members. The cross-country, rural-urban and cohort comparison will be based on quantitative and qualitative research.
The project aims at analyzing strategies of private lower- and medium-level-income households to make a living (sustainable livelihoods). Data are gathered by three research teams in Kazakhstan (regions Astana and Almaty) and Kyrgyzstan (region Bishkek). Furthermore, the project trains young research scholars in the participating institutions.
