Short Description of the Project: Systemic change fro m a planned economy to market economy requires not only a n implementation of market institutions but also a mar ket -oriented acti on of citizens in everyday-life. The question th a t concerns us is how far actors have adapted to self-responsibility in facing such challenges as provision for the old ag e , unemployment, crises, etc. form themselves and their family members. The cross-country, rural-urban and cohort comparison will be based on quantitative and qualitative research.

The project aims at analyzing strategies of private lower- and medium-level-income households to make a living (sustainabl e l iveli hoods). Data are gathered by three research teams in Kazakhstan (regions Astana and Almaty) an d Kyrgyzstan (region Bishkek). Furthermore, the project trains y oung research scholars in the participating institutions.
