Schwerpunkte der Forschung am Lehrstuhl für Systembiologie an der Otto-von-Guericke Universität Magdeburg sind die Kommunikation von Zellen und die dadurch vermittelten Regulierungsprozesse bei Entzündungen. Entzündungen im Körper können Heilprozesse sein, aber auch zu Autoimmunerkrankungen, chronischen Entzündungen oder Krebs führen. Wir wollen verstehen, wie einzelne Hormone ihre Signale in die Zellen übertragen, um dort Entzündungsprozesse zu regulieren und zu steuern. Es sollen in interdisziplinärer Zusammenarbeit mathematische Modelle generiert werden, um die komplexen Regulationsnetzwerke der Zellen untereinander zu simulieren und zu verstehen. Im Fokus stehen die Signaltransduktion der Interleukin-6 Zytokine sowie das Zusammenspiel mit Glukokortikoiden. Hierbei werden die Mechanismen der zellulären Kommunikation auf molekularer Ebene erforscht. Besonderes Interesse gilt dem Zusammenspiel einzelner Signalwege sowie der Regulationsprinzipien der Signaltransduktion.
